Not all six scores are equally actionable. The sequence below is the order that creates the most leverage — each step unlocks cleaner data for the steps that follow.
Before you can diagnose anything, the instruments need to be working. Install GA4 and verify it's recording correctly. Set up Google Tag Manager. Connect Google Search Console. Install Microsoft Clarity. Verify Google Ads conversion tracking is firing. This sounds obvious. In practice, most companies discover at this step that at least one critical tracking tool is installed but misconfigured — collecting data that means nothing or missing data entirely. Don't skip this step. The rest of the diagnostic process is only as accurate as the data your tools are capturing.
Start here because a slow, technically broken site corrupts every other metric. If your site loads in 6 seconds on mobile, your bounce rate looks bad, your engagement rate looks bad, and your Quality Score looks bad — but the root cause isn't any of those things. A low Quality Score against clean infrastructure is a real signal. A low Quality Score against a broken site is noise. Now you can tell the difference.
The final layer. With everything else functioning correctly, run a site audit via SEMrush or review your coverage report in Search Console. Look for crawl errors, indexing issues, broken internal links, and missing meta data. Check your domain authority trend — is it growing, flat, or declining? If it's declining while your content production is increasing, something is suppressing your authority signals. Could be thin content, could be broken backlinks, could be technical issues you've now resolved in steps 1-4.
This isn't step six. It runs parallel to every other step. Every fix, every change, every improvement needs to be tested on mobile before it's considered done. Use Chrome DevTools' device emulation to test the common screen sizes your analytics show you your audience is using.
